If you are struggling right now: call or text
988,
or text HOME to 741741.
Veterans, press 1 after you call 988. The practice can wait. You matter more.
For the conversation you are actually dreading: the record, the gap, the accommodation you need, the first job with no history. Build your answer in your own words, then practice it from your chair and from theirs, because fear sits on both sides of the table.
Built from 21 branching scenarios across five situations, each choice graded against the disclosure and desistance research (Maruna 2001; Pager 2003; Ali, Lyons & Ryan 2017; SHRM 2021; EEOC 2012), and a story builder built on the three-part answer from Invest Hamilton County's re-entry research
Deterministic and device-only: nothing writes your answer for you and nothing you type is sent anywhere. Alex Plus members can choose to send a draft to the coach for one reply, which is not stored. Written at a sixth-grade reading level on purpose.
First meeting with your workplace mentor · The candidate's chair
"So, tell me about yourself"
The question that assumes you have a career to describe.
They are not testing you. They are trying to work out what to give you to do, and they have about four minutes to decide. School counts here. So does anything you have organised, fixed, practised or stuck with.
Mentor: “So tell me a bit about yourself. What brings you here?”
Strong move
Specific, checkable, and it hands them a job to give you. They now know you can be trusted with something careful.
Depends on the room
True, and it could be any of four hundred students. Nothing here tells them what to hand you on Monday.
Costs you something
You have volunteered the one thing they already knew and given away the frame. Willingness is not a skill, and they still do not know what to do with you.
Mentor: “Have you done anything like this before?”
Strong move
You did not pretend to experience you lack, and you answered what they were actually asking.
Depends on the room
Honest, and it closes the door behind it. A short true answer with nothing after it makes them do all the work.
Costs you something
If they ask a second question you are exposed, and you have spent trust you will need later on something you did not need to claim.
Now you, out loud
One way it can sound
“”
Keep these
School work is work. Name the part that required care.
Never open with what you lack. They already know.
Give them something to hand you on day one.

Talk it through with your Alex coach
A conversation, not a form. Your coach knows Hamilton
County's numbers and programs, and it will point you to the right tool
for anything it can't answer. It's an AI coach, your chats are private,
and they are never used to train anything.
