Write your cover letter

Write a cover letter from your resume and the job posting. You can edit every word.

Built from Only what you entered: your resume, the job details and your own reasons. Posting requirements are listed for you to check, never added as things you have.

Runs in your browser and is saved on this device until you delete it. Download as a Word file or print to PDF.

The job you are applying for

Applying to more than one job? Each application keeps its own letter, posting and interview notes. Save this one before you start the next, and reopen it here later.

The letter uses the job duties to choose which of your experiences to mention. It ignores benefits, pay and application instructions. A requirement in the posting is never added to your letter as something you have.

This opens the letter, in your words, so the first line is a reason and not a form. Only what you write here goes in. Leave it blank and the letter opens with the job title instead.

A career break, a license being renewed, a degree from another country, a requirement you are still working toward. Said plainly in one or two sentences, it reads as a plan; left for the interview, it reads as a surprise. It prints as its own short paragraph after your experience. A reason for a change needs no diagnosis: “I am moving off the road” is a whole reason. A record is yours to mention or not; if you do, one sentence with what you have done since is enough, and it never goes on the resume. The check list below names the requirements your resume does not mention.

Each choice adds a sentence to the box above. Tap it again to take it back out. Edit it into your own words and keep only what is true for you.

    Check before you send

      Your drafts on this device

The cover letter tool runs in your browser. What you type here is not sent to Alex's servers. One thing leaves it: when you press Find duties for this job, Alex looks up the job title you typed and the job you pick. Alex does not keep either. Your work is saved in this browser so you can come back to it.

Your drafts are saved in this browser on this device. They stay here after you close the tab or the browser, until you delete them.

On a shared or library computer: turn on shared-computer mode before you start, and delete your drafts before you leave. Download or print anything you want to keep first.

Talk it through with your Alex coach

A conversation, not a form. Your coach knows Hamilton County's numbers and programs, and it will point you to the right tool for anything it can't answer. It's an AI coach, your chats are private, and they are never used to train anything.
